The Experience

This is an opportunity to discover the distinct farming practices of Japan in the picturesque village of Otaki. Unlike North American agriculture, Japanese farmers cultivate small plots nestled within the mountains, harmoniously blending tradition and nature. Experience the pride and passion of Otaki’s residents as they tend to their crops, raise animals, and sell their harvest at local markets.
As younger generations migrate to urban areas, the ageing farmers of Otaki face challenges in preserving their way of life. By joining them, you contribute not only to their daily tasks but also to the preservation of their rich cultural heritage. The village’s traditional Japanese architecture and customs create an enchanting setting where wisdom and knowledge are shared freely.

Daily life in Otaki begins with the sunrise, and your day may start early with chores before breakfast. Throughout the day, tasks vary depending on the season and weather, with 2-5 hours of work on average. Spring, summer, and autumn activities occur outdoors, encompassing farming and maintenance tasks, while late autumn and winter focus on indoor work like preserving the harvest and participating in local handicrafts.

Beyond farming, you will have the opportunity to connect with other participants and explore the captivating surroundings of Otaki. Immerse yourself in the beauty of rural Japan, where traditions thrive, and the breathtaking countryside awaits your discovery.

Please note that during January and February, you will assist with snow removal and enjoy winter sports like sledding and snow trekking, along with other weather-permitting activities.
