Support Traditional Farming and Cultural Preservation in Rural Japan

As a volunteer, you’ll assist local farmers with planting, harvesting, and preserving crops—gaining hands-on skills in sustainability and food systems. Beyond the fields, you’ll support elderly residents with daily tasks and share in moments of cultural exchange that bring generations together.

This project is ideal for those seeking purpose, simplicity, and the chance to build relationships that go deeper than a typical trip abroad. Spend your days surrounded by nature and your evenings enriched by stories, laughter, and new friendships in a place that feels like home.

The Experience

Discover a different side of Japan through this immersive volunteer program in the mountain village of Otaki. Unlike large-scale farming seen elsewhere, Japanese agriculture often takes place on small, terraced plots that blend beautifully into the natural landscape. Work alongside local farmers who carry deep pride in their craft, cultivating crops, raising animals, and selling produce in village markets.

As younger generations move to cities, Otaki’s aging population faces the challenge of maintaining their traditional way of life. By lending a hand, you’ll support not just daily farm work, but also help preserve a rich cultural heritage rooted in harmony, sustainability, and community.

Daily activities vary by season—ranging from outdoor farm and maintenance tasks in warmer months to indoor projects like food preservation and handicrafts in winter. In January and February, volunteers also assist with snow removal and can enjoy seasonal fun like sledding or snow trekking.

This is more than a farming project—it’s a chance to live simply, connect deeply, and experience the warmth, wisdom, and beauty of rural Japan.
