The Experience

Work alongside seasoned field technicians and shark experts, gaining practical experience and contributing to vital conservation efforts in the Gulf of California.
Our program offers a unique blend of hands-on fieldwork, scientific lectures, and office experience tailored to individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels. With a maximum of three interns at a time, you’ll receive personalized mentorship and ample opportunities for growth as you explore every facet of shark monitoring and research.

As a Shark Conservation Intern, you’ll engage in diverse activities designed to provide a well-rounded understanding of shark research:

  1. Participate in underwater and terrestrial surveys to observe sharks in their natural habitat.
  2. Perform health assessments and analyze toxicity and nutritional status of sharks.
  3. Utilize passive and active acoustic telemetry for shark tracking.
  4. Conduct surveys at artisanal fish camps to study shark abundance and species composition.
  5. Assist with biopsy and blood sampling procedures alongside our scientific team.
  6. Estimate shark growth using morphological and visual estimation techniques.
  7. Analyze shark diet and nutrition to assess their health and condition.
  8. Contribute to habitat sampling through plankton sampling, eDNA sampling, and habitat mapping.
  9. Engage in underwater and aerial drone surveys to study shark abundance, distribution, and behavior.
  10. Implement photo identification techniques and identification software.
  11. Deploy non-invasive underwater video camera stations (BRUVS) for monitoring purposes.
  12. Conduct data entry and analysis using statistical software tools.
  13. Participate in community outreach projects to raise awareness about shark conservation.
  14. Assist with shark tagging trips in collaboration with local fisherfolk and our scientific team.
  15. Conduct pelagic shark monitoring to gather valuable data on species distribution and population estimates.
