Shark Conservation Journey in Baja California Sur

  • Hands-on Fieldwork: Work alongside seasoned field technicians and shark experts, gaining practical, real-world experience in shark monitoring and research.

  • Scientific Education: Participate in scientific lectures and gain a deeper understanding of marine biology and conservation practices.

  • Personalized Mentorship: With a maximum of three interns, you will receive tailored guidance, support, and mentorship throughout your experience.

  • Collaborative Research: Contribute to important research focused on sharks and their ecosystems, while working with local communities and international researchers.

Our program blends hands-on research with dynamic educational initiatives, aimed at fostering action and deepening the commitment to preserving our oceans. You’ll collaborate with local, national, and international students, providing invaluable logistical support as they pursue their research objectives and gain hands-on experience in marine conservation.

As part of this mission, you’ll contribute to groundbreaking research efforts that focus on the elasmobranch species of Mexican waters. By raising awareness and sharing knowledge about the vital role of sharks and other marine species, you’ll help inspire future ocean advocates and ensure the continued preservation of these majestic creatures for generations to come.

The Experience

Activities You’ll Be Involved In:

  • Underwater and Terrestrial Surveys: Observe sharks in their natural habitat, collecting valuable data on their behavior and distribution.

  • Health Assessments: Assist with evaluating the health of sharks, including analyzing their toxicity and nutritional status.

  • Shark Tracking: Use passive and active acoustic telemetry to track sharks’ movements and monitor their populations.

  • Fish Camp Surveys: Conduct surveys at artisanal fish camps to study shark abundance and species composition.

  •  Biopsy and Blood Sampling: Participate in scientific sampling procedures to assess shark health and diet.

  • Growth Estimation: Learn techniques for estimating shark growth using morphological and visual estimation methods.

  • Diet and Nutrition Analysis: Investigate the nutritional health of sharks by studying their diet.

  • Habitat Sampling: Contribute to important habitat research through plankton sampling, eDNA sampling, and habitat mapping.

  • Drone and Photo Identification: Use underwater and aerial drones for surveys and engage in photo identification techniques to track individual sharks.

  • Non-invasive Monitoring: Deploy underwater video camera stations (BRUVS) to monitor shark activity without disturbing their natural behavior.

  • Data Entry & Analysis: Participate in the analysis of collected data using statistical software to draw meaningful conclusions from the research.

  • Community Outreach: Get involved in educational programs and outreach projects to raise awareness about shark conservation.

  • Shark Tagging: Assist with shark tagging trips, working closely with local fisherfolk and scientific teams to collect critical data.

  • Pelagic Shark Monitoring: Gather data on pelagic sharks to estimate their population distribution and conservation status.
